LED lighting woordenboek

Understanding LED lighting terminology helps you make informed decisions about your lighting solutions. This glossary covers the most important technical terms and concepts in LED technology.

Lumens (lm)

The unit measuring total light output from a source. Unlike watts, which measure energy consumption, lumens indicate actual brightness. A typical 60W incandescent bulb produces around 800 lumens, while an LED achieving the same output uses only 8-10 watts.

Colour Temperature (Kelvin/K)

Measured in Kelvin, this describes the colour appearance of light. Warm white (2700-3000K) creates a cosy atmosphere, neutral white (4000K) suits offices, and cool white (5000-6500K) provides clinical brightness for task lighting.

CRI (Colour Rendering Index)

A scale from 0-100 measuring how accurately colours appear under a light source compared to natural sunlight. Quality LED lighting should have a CRI of 80 or higher, with 90+ considered excellent for retail, galleries, and interior spaces where colour accuracy matters.

Efficacy (lm/W)

The ratio of light output (lumens) to energy input (watts). Modern LED technology achieves 100-150 lm/W, significantly outperforming incandescent bulbs (10-17 lm/W) and fluorescent tubes (60-90 lm/W). Higher efficacy means lower running costs.

Beam Angle

The spread of light from a source, measured in degrees. Narrow beams (15-30°) create spotlighting effects, medium beams (35-60°) suit general accent lighting, and wide beams (90-120°) provide ambient illumination for larger areas.

IP Rating (Ingress Protection)

A two-digit code indicating protection against solids and liquids. The first digit (0-6) covers dust, the second (0-8) covers moisture. IP65 suits outdoor use, IP44 works for bathrooms, and IP20 suffices for dry indoor locations.

Dimming Compatibility

Not all LEDs dim smoothly. Phase-cut dimming (leading/trailing edge) works with traditional dimmers, while 0-10V and DALI protocols offer professional control. Always verify dimmer compatibility to avoid flickering, limited range, or buzzing.

Driver

The electronic component converting mains voltage to the low DC voltage LEDs require. Constant current drivers maintain stable output regardless of voltage fluctuations. Quality drivers prevent flickering and extend LED lifespan significantly.

Lifespan (L70/L80)

LED lifespan indicates when output decreases to 70% (L70) or 80% (L80) of initial brightness. A rating of 50,000 hours L80 means the LED maintains 80% brightness for approximately 17 years at 8 hours daily use.

Binning

The manufacturing process grouping LEDs by colour and brightness characteristics. Quality manufacturers use tight binning tolerances (MacAdam 3-step ellipses or better) ensuring consistent colour across multiple fixtures in one installation.

UGR (Unified Glare Rating)

A metric measuring discomfort glare from lighting fixtures, scaled from 10-30. Values below 19 suit offices and detailed work, while 22-25 works for industrial spaces. Lower UGR values indicate better visual comfort.

Lux

The measurement of illuminance—how much light falls on a surface (lumens per square metre). Office desks typically require 500 lux, while precision work needs 1000+ lux. Lux values decrease with distance from the light source.

Flicker

Rapid fluctuations in light output, often imperceptible but causing eye strain and headaches. Quality LED drivers eliminate visible flicker (>100Hz). IEEE 1789 compliant products ensure flicker-free performance for sensitive environments.

Heat Management

LEDs generate heat at the junction, requiring proper dissipation through heatsinks or chassis design. Excessive temperatures reduce lifespan and efficiency. Quality fixtures maintain junction temperatures below 85°C for optimal performance.

Power Factor (PF)

The ratio of real power to apparent power, ranging from 0-1. LEDs with PF >0.9 use electricity efficiently, reducing wasted energy and meeting building regulations. Poor power factor increases electricity distribution costs.

COB (Chip-on-Board)

A LED packaging technology mounting multiple chips directly onto a substrate, creating a single, powerful light source. COB LEDs offer excellent thermal management, uniform light distribution, and high lumen density in compact designs.

Smart/Connected Lighting

LED systems integrating with control protocols like Bluetooth, Zigbee, or Wi-Fi for remote management. Features include scheduling, colour tuning, dimming, and integration with building management systems for energy optimisation.

Tunable White

Technology allowing colour temperature adjustment throughout the day. Mimicking natural light patterns supports circadian rhythms—warmer tones (2700K) for evenings, cooler (5000K+) for alertness during working hours.

Emergency Lighting

LED fixtures with integrated battery backup activating during power failures. Self-testing versions automatically verify functionality, meeting safety regulations for escape routes, requiring typically 3 hours autonomy at reduced output.

LM-80 & TM-21

Industry standards for measuring LED lumen maintenance. LM-80 defines testing methods over 10,000+ hours, while TM-21 provides extrapolation formulas projecting long-term performance. Both ensure reliable lifespan claims from manufacturers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is color temperature in LED lighting terminology?
Color temperature measures the warmth or coolness of LED light, expressed in Kelvin. Lower values around 2700K produce warm yellow light while higher values above 5000K create cool white or daylight tones.

What does lumens mean in LED specifications?
Lumens measure the total amount of visible light output from an LED source. This metric has replaced watts as the standard for measuring brightness since LED efficiency varies between manufacturers.

What is CRI in LED lighting?
CRI stands for Color Rendering Index and measures how accurately LED light reveals true colors compared to natural sunlight. A CRI above 80 is considered good while 90 plus is excellent for residential and commercial applications.

What does IP rating mean for LED fixtures?
IP rating indicates the level of protection against dust and water ingress in LED fixtures. The first digit rates dust protection while the second rates moisture resistance with higher numbers indicating better protection.

What is beam angle in LED terminology?
Beam angle describes the spread of light from an LED source measured in degrees. Narrow beams below 40 degrees create focused spotlights while wide beams above 60 degrees provide general ambient lighting.

What does dimmable mean for LED lights?
Dimmable LEDs can adjust their light output from full brightness down to lower levels using compatible dimmer switches. Not all LED products are dimmable so checking specifications before installation is essential.
