IK Protection Rating Explained: Meaning, Table & Application
The IK protection rating defines the mechanical impact resistance of luminaire housings – this guide explains all levels, standards and sector-specific minimum requirements.
The IK protection rating describes, in accordance with IEC 62262 (implemented in the UK as BS EN 62262), how well a housing is protected against mechanical impact – from untested (IK00) to 20 joules of impact energy (IK10). For facility managers, electricians and buyers, selecting the correct IK class is essential to minimise downtime, replacement part costs and liability risks.
- IK stands for "Impact Protection" and is standardised in BS EN 62262 – independently of the IP protection rating.
- The scale runs from IK00 (untested) to IK10 (20 joules) and beyond as IK10+.
- IK08 (5 joules) is considered the recommended minimum standard for industrial and warehouse environments; IK10 (20 joules) is normatively required or strongly recommended in sports halls and vandalism-prone outdoor areas.
- IP and IK protection ratings are two separate designations that must be combined – e.g. IP65 + IK08 for outdoor storage areas.
- A higher IK class reduces whole-life costs: fewer luminaire breakages, less downtime, lower insurance risks.
What Is the IK Protection Rating? Definition and Standard
The IK protection rating (Impact Protection) denotes the resistance of a housing to external mechanical impact. The basis is the international standard IEC 62262, implemented in the UK as BS EN 62262, which superseded the earlier EN 50102.
Important: the IK protection rating is not part of the IP code. Both designations exist alongside one another and describe different protective properties. Whilst the IP code defines protection against solid particles and water, the IK code assesses mechanical impact resistance exclusively. For more on the IP system, please refer to our guide IP Protection Ratings Explained.
The luminaire standard BS EN 60598-1 requires luminaires to have adequate mechanical strength. The specific IK class required depends on the installation location and the risk assessment.
Complete IK Table: IK00 to IK10+
The following table shows all standardised levels with impact energy, test body and practical classification:
| IK Level | Impact Energy | Test Body / Method | Comparative Value (Practical) |
|---|---|---|---|
| IK00 | Untested | – | No defined protection; not suitable for industrial environments |
| IK01 | 0.14 J | Polyamide pendulum, 200 g / 70 mm | Light finger impact |
| IK02 | 0.20 J | Polyamide pendulum, 200 g / 100 mm | Light tool contact |
| IK03 | 0.35 J | Polyamide pendulum, 200 g / 175 mm | Office environment, protected interior spaces |
| IK04 | 0.50 J | Polyamide pendulum, 200 g / 250 mm | Normal residential rooms, offices |
| IK05 | 0.70 J | Polyamide pendulum, 200 g / 350 mm | Minimum requirement for non-specialist distribution boards (IEC 61439-3) |
| IK06 | 1.00 J | Polyamide pendulum, 500 g / 200 mm | Light workshop areas, stairwells |
| IK07 | 2.00 J | Steel pendulum, 500 g / 400 mm | School corridors, car parks (pedestrian areas) |
| IK08 | 5.00 J | Steel pendulum, 1.7 kg / 300 mm | Industry, warehouses, workshops with machinery |
| IK09 | 10.00 J | Steel pendulum, 5 kg / 200 mm | Heavy industry, outdoor areas with vehicle traffic |
| IK10 | 20.00 J | Steel pendulum, 5 kg / 400 mm | Sports halls, public areas, vandalism protection |
| IK10+ | > 20 J (rec. 50 J) | Manufacturer-specific; standard recommends 50 J | High-security areas, prisons, tunnel lighting |
Note on IK00: IK00 does not mean that the housing was tested and failed – it means that no test was carried out. For all commercial and industrial applications, a minimum of IK06 should be specified.
Note on IK10+: Values above IK10 are no longer contained in the standard's table. The standard recommends an impact energy of 50 joules for this special case; the test methodology is agreed between the manufacturer and the client.
IK08 vs. IK10: The Key Difference
In practice, the choice between IK08 and IK10 is the most common purchasing decision. The difference is greater than the numbers suggest: IK10 withstands four times as much impact energy as IK08.
| Feature | IK08 | IK10 |
|---|---|---|
| Impact energy | 5 joules | 20 joules |
| Test body | 1.7 kg steel pendulum, 300 mm drop height | 5 kg steel pendulum, 400 mm drop height |
| Typical application | Industry, warehouses, workshops, outdoor storage | Sports halls, public areas, vandalism protection |
| Housing material | Reinforced polycarbonate or aluminium | High-impact polycarbonate, stainless steel or die-cast aluminium |
| Price premium vs. IK07 | Low | Moderate – offset by longer service life |
| Recommendation | Standard for commercial indoor and outdoor areas | Recommended or normatively required where there is a risk of ball impact, vandalism or public infrastructure use |
IP and IK: Two Protection Ratings That Belong Together
A common planning error: buyers pay attention to the IP protection rating but overlook the IK code. A luminaire rated IP65 is dust-tight and jet-water resistant – but without an adequate IK value, a single impact can damage the housing and compromise the IP protection.
The following combination recommendations assist with selection:
| Application Area | Recommended IP Rating | Recommended IK Rating | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Office, administration | IP20–IP44 | IK03–IK05 | No elevated impact risk |
| Stairwells, corridors | IP44 | IK07 | Occasional mechanical stress |
| Workshop, production | IP54–IP65 | IK08 | Dust, swarf, tool contact |
| High-bay warehouse, forklift operations | IP65 | IK08–IK09 | Impact risk from goods and vehicles |
| Sports hall (ball sports) | IP44–IP54 | IK10 | Ball impact; refer to DIN 18032-3 |
| Outdoor area, car park | IP65–IP66 | IK08–IK09 | Weather and vehicle traffic |
| Public areas, vandalism | IP65–IP66 | IK10 | Deliberate damage |
| Tunnel lighting, high security | IP66–IP67 | IK10+ | Extreme mechanical stress |
Sector-Specific Minimum Requirements
Industry and Logistics
In high-bay warehouses with forklift operations, IK08 is recommended as the minimum. Impacts from forklifts, pallets and goods are not the exception but the norm. For outdoor storage areas or covered loading zones, the combination IP65 + IK09 is recommended.
For LED tri-proof lights in warehouse and production facilities, you should exclusively select products with a documented IK value on the rating plate or in the data sheet.
Sports Halls and Sports Facilities
For sports halls used for ball sports (handball, basketball, volleyball), IK10 is normatively required. DIN 18032-3 governs the requirements for sports halls and includes mechanical protection requirements for luminaires. Luminaires without IK10 do not comply with the standard in this context and may jeopardise insurance claims.
For outdoor sports facilities – football, tennis, padel – additional elevated IP requirements apply. Our categories LED Sports Field Lighting and Football Pitch Lighting feature exclusively tested products with the appropriate protection ratings.
Public Infrastructure and Vandalism Protection
Bus shelters, underpasses, car parks and public conveniences are particularly vulnerable to vandalism. Here, IK10 in combination with IP65 or IP66 is the industry standard. The standard IEC 62262 defines the IK protection rating as resistance to mechanical impacts arising from everyday use as well as deliberate damage.
For LED street lights in public areas, IK08 should be defined as the minimum and IK10 as the target value.
Potentially Explosive Atmospheres
In ATEX zones, explosion protection directives apply in addition to IK requirements. Please refer to our guide ATEX & Ex-Protection LED Lighting. Our ATEX Explosion-Proof LED Luminaires meet both requirement profiles.

TCO Argument: Why a Higher IK Class Saves Money
Investing in a higher IK class pays off in most commercial environments within a few years. The following example illustrates the logic – without specific price figures, as these vary by product:
Scenario: Outdoor storage area with 50 luminaires, IK08 vs. IK10 over 5 years
- With IK08: assuming 2 luminaire failures per year due to impact damage = 10 replacements over 5 years, plus installation costs and production downtime.
- With IK10: assuming 0–1 failures over 5 years due to significantly higher impact resistance.
- Result: the price premium for IK10 luminaires is typically more than offset by savings on replacement and installation costs.
There is also the insurance aspect to consider: luminaires with verified IK10 protection in vandalism-prone areas can improve the liability position in the event of property damage. Please discuss this with your insurer and your qualified electrician.
Test Methodology: How Is the IK Value Determined?
Testing is carried out using a standardised pendulum impact procedure. Up to IK06, lightweight polyamide test bodies are used; from IK07 onwards, defined steel pendulums with specified mass and drop height are employed.
The test body is dropped from the defined height onto the housing or swung as a pendulum. The housing is deemed to have passed if it continues to fulfil its protective function afterwards – meaning it shows no cracks that would compromise the IP protection or electrical safety.
Important for buyers: always request the test certificate or test report from an accredited test laboratory. An IK value printed on a rating plate without supporting documentation has no legal standing. Reputable manufacturers provide these documents on request.
Safety Notice: Installation and Connection
All work on 230V and 400V installations – including mounting, connecting and replacing luminaires – must be carried out exclusively by qualified electricians. BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), the relevant health and safety legislation and the five safety rules apply. Please also refer to our guide Connecting an LED Lamp: Step-by-Step Guide for background information on correct installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the IP and IK protection rating?
The IP protection rating (Ingress Protection) describes protection against the ingress of solid particles and water. The IK protection rating describes protection against external mechanical impacts. Both designations are independent of one another and must be stated separately on the rating plate. For demanding environments, both values must be considered together.
What does IK00 mean – no protection or untested?
IK00 means that the housing has not been tested for impact resistance. It makes no statement as to whether the housing would survive an impact or not. For all commercial and industrial applications, a minimum of IK06 should be specified. IK00 is acceptable at most for protected interior spaces with no impact risk whatsoever.
What IK value do I need for a sports hall?
For sports halls used for ball sports (handball, basketball, volleyball, indoor football), IK10 with 20 joules of impact energy is normatively required. DIN 18032-3 governs the requirements for sports halls and includes mechanical protection requirements for luminaires. Luminaires with a lower IK value do not comply with the standard in this context and may jeopardise insurance claims.
Do I always need to combine IK and IP?
In practice, yes. A luminaire with a high IP rating but a low IK value can be damaged by a single impact to the extent that the IP protection is no longer guaranteed. Conversely, a high IK value does not protect against moisture. For outdoor and industrial environments, a minimum of IP65 + IK08 is recommended; for vandalism-prone areas, IP65 + IK10.
What is IK10+ and when is it required?
IK10+ denotes impact resistance above 20 joules, which is no longer captured in the standard's table. The standard IEC 62262 recommends a value of 50 joules for this special case. IK10+ is used in high-security environments such as prisons, tunnels or military installations. The test methodology is agreed individually between the manufacturer and the client.
Are there normative minimum requirements for specific areas?
Yes. Distribution boards for indoor installation intended for operation by non-specialists must achieve at least IK05 in accordance with IEC 61439-3. DIN 18032-3 applies to sports halls with an IK10 requirement. For luminaires in general, BS EN 60598-1 requires adequate mechanical strength without prescribing a specific IK value – this is determined by the risk assessment for the installation location.
How can I tell whether an IK value has genuinely been tested?
An IK value printed on a rating plate alone is not sufficient evidence. Request the test certificate or test report from an accredited test laboratory from the manufacturer or supplier. Reputable manufacturers provide these documents on request. At Clightstore, all relevant technical documents for our products are available.
Can I upgrade a luminaire with a low IK value using a protective cover?
Retrospective protective covers can improve mechanical protection, but they also alter the thermal properties of the luminaire and may affect the manufacturer's guarantee. Furthermore, the combined IK value of the luminaire and cover is not automatically certified. It is advisable to select the correct IK class from the outset – this is more economical and legally sound in the long term.
