Backlit vs. Edge-Lit LED Panel: Which Is Better?
Backlit or edge-lit LED panel? This guide explains the technical differences, standard requirements and gives clear purchasing recommendations for industry, offices and logistics.
Backlit LED panels direct light straight from behind the diffuser panel; edge-lit panels feed it in from the side via a light guide plate. For most commercial and industrial applications, backlit panels offer higher efficiency, better heat distribution and lower ageing risks – edge-lit panels excel where minimal depth and elegant design are the priority.
- Backlit panels can achieve luminous efficacies of over 160 lm/W, because the direct light path requires no light guide plate and minimises scatter losses.
- Edge-lit panels are slimmer (often under 15 mm) and suit design requirements in reception areas or showrooms.
- The light guide plate (LGP) of budget edge-lit models made from polystyrene can yellow over time; backlit panels are unaffected by this.
- For standards-compliant workplace lighting to DIN EN 12464-1 (UGR, illuminance, Ra), backlit panels with UGR<19 are the more reliable choice.
- Backlit panels distribute heat evenly across the entire surface; in edge-lit panels heat concentrates at the edges, which can affect LED service life.
Operating principle: How do the two technologies differ?
Backlit: Direct light from behind
In a backlit LED panel, the LEDs are distributed evenly across the entire rear of the panel. The light strikes a diffuser directly, which spreads it uniformly across the emission surface. This short, direct light path is the decisive efficiency factor: there is no light guide plate to absorb or scatter energy.
The result is high luminous efficacy combined with homogeneous illumination. Modern backlit panels from the Clightstore range achieve luminous efficacies that many edge-lit designs cannot match.
Edge-lit: Indirect light via light guide plate
Edge-lit panels position the LEDs along one or more sides of the frame. The light is coupled into a transparent light guide plate (LGP) and redirected forwards by microstructures on the plate surface. This indirect route consumes light energy and limits the maximum achievable efficacy.
The advantage lies in the depth: edge-lit panels can be built extremely slim, making them attractive for suspended design ceilings or areas with very little plenum space.
Technical head-to-head: Backlit vs. edge-lit

Standard requirements: What DIN EN 12464-1 specifies
DIN EN 12464-1 "Lighting of indoor work places" defines requirements for illuminance (maintained value Em in lux), glare limitation (UGR), colour rendering (Ra) and uniformity for commercial lighting projects. The standard is recognised in Germany as a technical rule and is used in practice as a binding planning framework.
The interplay of all criteria is decisive – a single lux value is not sufficient. For buyers and facility managers this means: the choice between backlit and edge-lit is always also a standards decision.
| Application area | Em (maintained value) | UGR max. | Ra min. | Recommended technology |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Office / display screen workstation | 500 lx | 19 | 80 | Backlit UGR<19 |
| Production hall | 500 lx | 22 | 80 | Backlit |
| Warehouse / shelf faces | 200 lx | 25 | 60 | Backlit or tri-proof light |
| Fine assembly / inspection workstation | 750 lx | 19 | 80 | Backlit UGR<19 |
| Precision assembly | 1,000 lx | 19 | 80 | Backlit UGR<19 + supplementary lighting |
| Reception / foyer | 300 lx | 22 | 80 | Edge-lit or backlit |
| School classroom | 500 lx | 19 | 80 | Backlit UGR<19 |

Thermal behaviour and service life
Heat management is an often underestimated factor when selecting panels. In backlit panels, heat is distributed evenly across the entire rear surface because the LEDs are arranged in a planar array. This protects the individual LED chips and extends service life.
In edge-lit panels, the entire thermal load is concentrated at the edges where the LEDs are located. Without adequate heat dissipation, the junction temperature of the LEDs rises, accelerating lumen depreciation. For applications with high operating hours – shift operation, 24/7 operation in logistics centres – this is a decisive purchasing disadvantage.
Our guide Lumens vs. lumens per watt explains the relationship between luminous flux and efficiency in more detail.
Ageing behaviour: Yellowing and colour temperature
Budget edge-lit panels use light guide plates made from polystyrene (PS). This material can turn yellowish over time under UV exposure and heat – the colour temperature shifts and the luminous flux drops visibly. With high-quality LGPs made from PMMA (acrylic glass) this risk is significantly lower, but the price is correspondingly higher.
Backlit panels have no light guide plate. The diffuser panel made from PMMA or PC is more UV-stable and retains its colour temperature throughout its entire service life. For hard-to-access ceiling installations in high-bay warehouses or production halls this is a decisive advantage: maintenance intervals are extended and replacement costs are reduced.

Sector-specific recommendations: Which panel for which application?
Office and display screen workstations
DIN EN 12464-1 specifies a UGR limit of 19 here. Backlit panels with certified UGR<19 are the safe choice. Edge-lit panels can also achieve this value, but are generally more expensive for lower efficiency. In open-plan offices with many luminaires, the efficiency advantage of backlit technology pays off quickly.
Our range of LED panels includes backlit models in all standard formats – 60×60, 120×30, 120×60 and 62×62 cm.
Industry and production
Production halls require a maintained illuminance Em of 500 lx at UGR 22 and Ra 80 to DIN EN 12464-1. Backlit panels reliably meet these requirements. The uniform heat distribution makes them robust under high operating hours in shift operation. For areas with dust, moisture or vibration, LED tri-proof lights with IP65 or higher are recommended instead of panels.
Logistics and warehouses
In warehouses, DIN EN 12464-1 specifies a maintained illuminance Em of 200 lx at shelf faces. Backlit panels are suitable for ceiling heights up to approximately 5 m. At greater mounting heights, LED high bays or linear systems are the better choice. The yellowing risk of edge-lit technology is particularly relevant here: ceiling installations in high-bay warehouses are difficult to access – long-lasting panels significantly reduce maintenance costs.
Schools, hospitals and public buildings
Flicker-free operation, UGR<19 and Ra ≥ 80 are planning-relevant requirements in these areas. Backlit panels with high-quality drivers (e.g. Tridonic or Osram) meet these requirements. The higher efficiency also permanently reduces the operating costs of public facilities.
Reception, showroom and design areas
This is where edge-lit can play to its strengths: the extremely slim construction enables elegant ceiling integration. Where operating hours are low and design requirements predominate, edge-lit is a legitimate choice. For colour temperature recommendations in reception areas, read our guide LED colour temperature: 2700K to 6000K.
Damp locations and outdoor areas
Neither backlit nor edge-lit panels are suitable as standard for damp locations or outdoor use. For these applications you require luminaires with a protection rating of at least IP65 to IEC 60529. Our guide IP protection ratings explained covers this in detail. For damp locations, LED tri-proof lights 150 cm or LED tri-proof lights 120 cm are recommended.

TCO analysis: What does operation really cost?
Purchase costs are only part of the overall calculation. For commercial buyers, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over the service life is decisive. Backlit panels with high luminous efficacy consume significantly less electricity than edge-lit models with lower efficiency for the same light output.
Example: 50 panels at 36W (backlit) vs. 50 panels at 40W (edge-lit) for the same light output, 3,000 operating hours per year and €0.30/kWh results in an annual electricity saving of approximately €180. Over a service life of 10 years this amounts to around €1,800 – excluding maintenance and replacement costs due to yellowing. Actual figures depend on the specific product specifications.
In addition: backlit panels in a comparable quality and performance class are generally less expensive to purchase than edge-lit models. The efficiency advantage therefore pays back even faster.
Installation and safety notice
LED panels are installed recessed (in grid ceilings), surface-mounted (with a surface-mount frame) or suspended, depending on the model. The electrical connection to the 230 V mains supply must be carried out exclusively by a qualified electrician. This is a binding requirement under DIN VDE 0100, DGUV Regulation 3 and the five safety rules of electrical engineering. Work on live parts by unqualified persons is prohibited and dangerous.
For a step-by-step overview of correct connection, read our guide Connecting an LED lamp: step-by-step guide. This guide is intended exclusively for qualified electricians.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between backlit and edge-lit LED panels?
In backlit panels, the LEDs sit in a planar array behind the diffuser and shine directly forwards. In edge-lit panels, the LEDs sit at the side of the frame and redirect light forwards via a light guide plate (LGP). Backlit panels are therefore more efficient; edge-lit panels are slimmer.
Why are backlit panels more efficient than edge-lit panels?
The direct light path without a light guide plate avoids scatter losses. Backlit panels typically achieve higher luminous efficacies than edge-lit panels. For the same light output, backlit panels therefore consume less electricity.
Can edge-lit panels yellow?
Yes, budget edge-lit panels with light guide plates made from polystyrene (PS) can turn yellowish under heat and UV exposure. This shifts the colour temperature and visibly reduces the luminous flux. High-quality LGPs made from PMMA are more stable but more expensive. Backlit panels have no LGP and are unaffected by this problem.
Which panel meets the UGR<19 requirement of DIN EN 12464-1?
Both technologies can achieve UGR<19. Backlit panels with specially optimised optics and diffusers are more frequently available in this class and at lower cost. Always look for an explicit UGR<19 declaration in the product data sheet – not every panel meets this value automatically.
Are backlit panels suitable for grid ceilings?
Yes, backlit panels are available in all standard formats (60×60, 62×62, 120×30, 120×60 cm) for grid ceilings. They simply drop into the existing grid. For ceilings without a grid, surface-mount frames or suspension kits are available.
Which panel is suitable for industrial halls and warehouses?
For industrial halls and warehouses with ceiling heights up to approximately 5 m, backlit panels are the first choice: high efficiency, uniform heat distribution, no yellowing risk. At greater mounting heights or in damp locations, LED high bays or LED tri-proof lights with the appropriate IP rating are recommended.
How long do backlit panels last compared to edge-lit panels?
Service life depends primarily on LED quality, the driver and heat dissipation. Backlit panels typically achieve L70 values of 50,000–70,000 operating hours. Edge-lit panels reach 40,000–60,000 hours, with LGP quality having an additional influence on perceived light quality.
Can backlit panels be dimmed?
Yes, provided the driver supports a dimming function (e.g. DALI, 0–10 V or Triac). Many backlit panels in the Clightstore range are available with power-adjustable drivers that allow simple adjustment of light output without additional controls. Check the driver specification in the relevant product data sheet.
