LED street lights: how to choose

A LED street light replaces sodium (SON) or metal halide lanterns on poles along roads, paths and car parks. It uses a fraction of the energy, lights up instantly and directs the light onto the road instead of into the sky, with a lifespan of 50,000 hours or more.

  • Roads and streetsResidential streets, access roads and industrial estates.
  • Car parksEven light over parking bays and driving lanes.
  • Paths and squaresCycle paths, footpaths and public squares.

Indicative values. Pole spacing, road width and the required light class determine the exact choice.

Street optic Type II or Type III?

A Type II optic throws a long, narrow beam along the road, ideal for paths and narrower streets with poles at the edge. A Type III optic spreads the light wider across the road, suited to wider streets, car parks and poles set further back from the area to be lit.

Power-adjustable and driver-ready models

On power-adjustable models you select the wattage on site, so one fitting covers several situations and you can fine-tune the light level after installation. Driver-ready fittings come without a driver: you choose a Sosen 1-10V driver with AstroDim (automatic night dimming without control cabling) or a MOSO DALI-2 driver with D4i for smart-city control systems. With the Sosen programmer you set output and dimming profile yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How far apart should street lights be?

As a rule of thumb, spacing is about 3 to 4 times the pole height, depending on the optic and the required light level. A light plan gives the exact layout.

Which spigot size fits my pole?

Our street lights fit Ø40 mm or Ø60 mm spigots, depending on the model. Check the product page, or ask us if you have a different pole diameter.

Which colour temperature should I choose?

4000K is the most common choice for roads and car parks. 2700K or 3000K gives a warmer light that is often required in residential areas and near nature, because it attracts fewer insects.

Can street lights dim automatically at night?

Yes. Models with AstroDim reduce output automatically during the quiet hours, and versions with a daylight sensor switch on and off by themselves at dusk and dawn.
