Damp and dirty spaces wear ordinary fittings out fast. Condensation, splashing water and cleaning with a hose get into the housing, and in livestock barns ammonia attacks plastics and metal. The IP rating tells you what a luminaire can handle: IP65 is dust-tight and protected against water jets, IP66 against powerful jets, and IP69K against high-pressure, high-temperature cleaning, as used in food processing and car washes.
