LED sports field lighting: the complete guide

Sports lighting has to do more than make a field bright. Players need to follow a fast ball without glare, spectators and cameras need even light, and neighbours shouldn't be bothered by spill. Modern LED floodlights with precise optics do all of that while using far less energy than the metal halide systems they replace.

Why dimming pays off

With DALI or 1-10V you can run a training session at a lower level and switch to full output for matches. Fewer full-power hours means lower energy bills and a longer service life.

Mast height and positioning

Most club pitches use 4, 6 or 8 masts of 12–18 m along the sides. Higher masts reduce glare and spill because the light hits the field at a steeper angle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse my existing masts?

Often, yes. LED floodlights are lighter than metal halide fittings. Check the bracket fixing and the mast's condition.

How much energy will I save?

Compared with metal halide systems, LED typically saves 50–70%, more when you dim for training.
