Short answer: your ceiling decides the size, the room decides the rest. A 600 mm grid ceiling takes a 60×60 panel, a 625 mm grid a 62×62, and a long office or corridor often a 120×30. Without a grid ceiling, you use the same panel in a surface-mount frame. For offices with screens, choose UGR<19 and 4000K, and count on about one 4,000 lm panel per 5 m² for 500 lux. This page takes you through the choice in four steps.

In brief
  • Size: measure a ceiling tile. About 595–600 mm = 60×60. About 620–625 mm = 62×62.
  • No grid ceiling: any panel with a surface-mount frame (from €13.15) or a suspension kit.
  • Screen work: UGR<19 is required by EN 12464-1.
  • Number: about 1 panel of 4,000 lm per 5 m² for 500 lux.
  • Price: 60×60 from €21.95, 62×62 from €20.85, 120×30 from €25.25 (incl. VAT, driver included).

1. Which size fits my ceiling?

LED panels replace a ceiling tile, so the size must match the grid exactly. A panel that is 2.5 cm too large or too small does not fit, and the two formats are not interchangeable. Measure an existing tile, or the distance between the centres of two parallel profiles.

Your ceiling Panel Replaces From (incl. VAT)
Grid ceiling, 600 mm module (tiles about 595 mm) 60×60 cm 4×18W fluorescent €21.95
Grid ceiling, 625 mm module (tiles about 620 mm) 62×62 cm 4×18W fluorescent €20.85
Grid ceiling with 1200 × 300 mm tiles, corridors, long rooms 120×30 cm 2×36W fluorescent €25.25
Large tiles 1200 × 600 mm 120×60 cm 6×18W fluorescent €58.25
Small rooms, toilets, storerooms 30×30 or 30×60 cm 2×18W fluorescent €14.25
Concrete, plaster or wooden ceiling any size + surface-mount frame surface-mounted fittings frame from €13.15

The 60×60 and 62×62 formats are explained in detail in LED Panel 60×60 or 62×62?, and the long format in LED Panel 120x30.

2. Which version for which room?

Room Choose Why
Office, screen work, classroom UGR<19, 4000K Required by EN 12464-1 for screen work; no reflections on monitors
Reception, meeting room UGR<19, 3000K or switchable (CCT) Warmer, calmer light
Corridor, storeroom, toilet Standard panel with motion sensor Light only when someone is there
Kitchen, bathroom, washroom IP65 panel Standard panels are for dry rooms only
Shop, showroom, practice High efficiency 200 lm/W, 4000K Bright light at the lowest running cost
Dark or modern interior Black panel Blends into dark ceilings

3. Backlit or edge-lit?

A backlit panel has its LEDs directly behind the diffuser; an edge-lit panel has them in the frame and guides the light through a plate. For most rooms, backlit is the better choice: it is more efficient, does not yellow and lasts longer. Edge-lit is slimmer and therefore useful where there is very little space above the ceiling. 4. How many panels do I need?

For an office at 500 lux, count about one panel of 4,000 lm per 5 m². A corridor or storeroom needs 100–200 lux, so roughly half to a third of that.

Room Area Lux Panels 60×60 or 62×62 (about 4,000 lm)
Single office 12 m² 500 2–3
Office for 4–6 people 30 m² 500 6
Open-plan office 100 m² 500 20
Meeting room 20 m² 500 4
Corridor 20 m² 100 1–2

With high ceilings, dark walls or tall furniture you need more. For larger offices, a free light calculation shows the exact number and the uniformity.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a 60×60 panel in a 62×62 ceiling?

No. The panel would fall through the grid or not fit between the profiles. Measure first and order the size that matches your ceiling.

Does an LED panel replace my old 4×18W fitting?

Yes. A 36–40W panel, or an 18–25W panel at 200 lm/W, gives at least as much light. The old fitting comes out completely; the panel has its own driver.

Do I need UGR<19?

For workstations with screens, yes: EN 12464-1 sets UGR 19 as the maximum. For corridors, storerooms and toilets, a standard panel is enough.

Which colour temperature should I choose?

4000K for offices and workstations, 3000K for reception and meeting areas. If you are unsure, a CCT panel lets you switch on site.

Is a panel or a tri-proof light better for a workshop?

In a dry workshop with a grid ceiling, a panel works. With dust, moisture or no ceiling, choose LED tri-proof lights. Above about 5 m, choose high bays: see Which LED High Bay Do I Need?
