LED floodlights: how to choose for yards, facades, car parks and sports fields

An LED floodlight lights up large outdoor areas from a distance: yards, loading zones, facades, car parks and sports fields. Our range runs from 10W to 400W with up to 180 lm/W, drivers from Sosen, Philips and Meanwell, and IP66 protection on almost all models, so rain, dust and pressure washing are no problem. Choose between the budget series and the premium series, add a motion sensor where you only need light when someone is there, or go to sports field lighting for courts and pitches. Explosion-proof areas need the ATEX floodlights.

Indicative values. Light level, area, pole height and beam angle determine the exact choice. A lighting plan gives the exact number of fixtures.

How many floodlights do you need?

Rule of thumb: required lumens = area × required lux ÷ utilisation factor (outdoors usually 0.4 to 0.5). Example: a yard of 500 m² at 20 lux needs 10,000 lm on the ground, so roughly 22,000 lm of luminaires, which is about two floodlights of 100W at 140 lm/W. Typical targets are 5 to 10 lux for traffic routes and around 20 lux for loading and unloading (EN 12464-2). Our guide Outdoor lighting for business premises goes through yards and loading zones, and car park lighting through car parks. For courts and pitches see tennis court lighting and how many lux a football pitch needs.

Colour temperature and aiming

4000K neutral white gives good colour recognition for working areas. 5000K to 6000K cold white feels brighter and suits security lighting. 3000K warm white suits facades and entrances. Aim the floodlight downwards and avoid pointing it at the horizon, so you light the area and not the neighbours. Choose a mounting bracket that lets you tilt the floodlight to the right angle.

What to look for in an LED floodlight

  • Efficacy: up to 180 lm/W means less wattage for the same light.
  • Protection: IP66 on almost all models: dust-tight and protected against strong water jets.
  • Driver: Sosen, Philips or Meanwell; dimming and sensor options are listed per model.
  • Warranty: up to 5 years, depending on the series.

Replacing halogen and metal halide floodlights

An LED floodlight of 100W to 150W typically replaces a 400W to 500W halogen or metal halide floodlight and uses roughly a third of the energy. It lights up instantly and needs hardly any maintenance. Calculate your savings with the payback calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Which IP rating do I need outdoors?

IP65 is the minimum for outdoors. Almost all our floodlights are IP66, which also withstands strong water jets.

Which colour temperature should I choose?

4000K for working areas, 5000K to 6000K for security lighting and 3000K for facades and warm surroundings.

Can I use a floodlight with a motion sensor?

Yes. The motion sensor series switches on only when someone is present and saves energy. See the models with sensor above.

How high do I mount a floodlight?

For yards and loading zones about 5 to 8 m. Mount higher with a larger wattage and aim it downwards.

Can floodlights be dimmed?

Several models offer dimming. The options are listed on each product page.

Do you make a lighting plan?

Yes, free of charge. Send the area, pole height and required lux and you receive a proposal with number of fixtures and layout.

What are delivery time and shipping costs?

Delivery takes 2 to 5 working days in most EU countries, and shipping is free from €100.
